A

Addon
Perl code that adds functionality to Coranto. 'hooks' in the core Coranto code allow addon code to use core functions to display menus, save settings, and perform other actions in concert with the core. This allows Coranto's abilities to be extended to suit each user's needs.

chmod
chmod is a Unix command for setting the permissions of a file or directory. It is short for change mode. If permissions are not set properly Coranto will not work because it can not create output files or the script may not be allowed to run on the server. See: chmod Explained.
Coranto
Coranto is a news posting/content management script written in PERL.
Custom Field
An additional data field created by the user. Each installation of Coranto can have as many fields as the user needs.
Custom User Field
A data field used for entry of information about the users of the Coranto installation. One example is to have an additional field for display name so that the name shown on an article is different from the internal user name.

Database
In Coranto this is is a text file named newsdat.txt. Every item entered into Coranto is stored in newsdat.txt. Coranto's profiles, styles, and templates are used to extract appropriate entries from newsdat.txt and to format the information for presentation on your web site. See the entry below on 'Flat File Database' for more info.
Dynamic Page
A web page that uses SSI, CGI, database calls, or scripting to create the content presented to the user's browser at the time that it is requested from the server. The framework of the page usually remains static and content is inserted into that framework. This can be used to insert the same header, footer, or menu into multiple pages making it easier to maintain the site. This is used with Coranto to separate the content management from the display of that content. See this Wikipedia Entry

F

Filtering
The act of using settings on the profile settings page, code in the news style, or an addon to select which items are included in Coranto's output when news is built. Common filters are by date, by number of items, or by number of days.
Flat File Database
Information stored in a plain text file. There is usually one record per line with the fields in the record delimited specified character (comma) or set of characters (Example: |x|). If no delimiter is used the fields are a fixed width. See this Wikipedia Entry for more detail. Coranto stores each item entered as a single line in newsdat.txt. The delimiter between fields is ``x.
FLOCK (File LOCK)
A PERL function for locking a file. Using this function does not actually block access to the file at the operating system level. It sets up a flag that the file is being operated on. Other software/scripts that use FLOCK will then wait until the file is available.
Full Rebuild
The process of regenerating all of Coranto's output files. Normally only the files that will have changes are generated when the build process is done. Available on the administration page in the Coranto interface.
Full Story
The complete text of a news item. Usually linked to from a teaser or headline.

N

newsdat.txt
The text file that Coranto stores data in. See the glossary entries 'Database' and 'Flat File Database' for more information.
News Field
A place to enter information. Each field is a sub-part of a News Item. In it's default install (Version 1.24) Coranto supports:
  • Single line text fields
  • Multiple line text fields
  • Drop down box
  • Radio Button
  • Checkbox
News Item
One record in the Coranto database. Coranto is designed as a news management tool. In the database (newsdat.txt) each item is stored on a single line and the values in the news fields are separated with the characters ''x.

S

Server Side Include (SSI)
A technology where the web server inserts the contents of one file or the output of a directive into the page being sent to the requesting user. Commonly used to add a header, footer, or navigation elements to pages where the element is the same on many pages. By editing the contents of the header or footer file the change occurs across all pages that include that file.
SSI is used to include the files output by Coranto into a web site's pages. This allows the content generated by Coranto to integrated with the site.
See: Wikipedia Entry
Snipping
Shortening an entry by use of the <Snip x: Field: name> tag, where 'x' is the number of characters you want to display and 'name' is the field you want to shorten. Used to create a teaser to the full story. More advanced options for snipping are available using the Snipper Addon.
Static Page
A web page that does not require any additional calls to the server (SSI or CGI) or to scripts that reside on the server to insert content before the page is sent to the user's browser.
Style
The code that each item is processed by when news is built. A style can contain markup consisting of pseudo-code which is interpreted by Coranto and PERL. Anything you can do with PERL can be done in a Coranto style. The style is specified in the profile settings.
Each item that is selected from the database based on the profile settings is processed by the style code. The result is output to a text file.
See: Styles Index
Style Tags
Markup that can be used in Coranto styles. These can be substitution tags, which result in a replacement of the tag with the value for a field (Example: <Field: Text>) or conditional tags (Example: <If: Field: Text>) that cause an expression to be evaluated.
