Unique Bug

Postby Div Devlin » Thu Apr 25, 2002 10:40 pm

I have a bug that is affecting my use of Newspro.
It's unique to me and really causing a headache, I know it's my PC, but no idea how to fix it.

I'm using I.E. on my home PC, I got to newspro login page...
mysite.com/cgi-bin/newspro/newspro.cgi

and enter my username and password.
I hit the log in button it takes me to the portal page.
"You are logged in, a cookie has been set."
I hit the link to take me to the main menu, and it returns me to the log in page.

I've tried it on 3 different pc's all work fine using I.E. and Netscape. It's only using I.E. on my home pc that I am having this issue.

I've wiped cookies, I've wiped saved passwords, I've wiped save pages, I've upgraded I.E. from 5.2 to 6.0, I've reinstalled windows.

I'm at a total loss. I can access newspro on other sites I admin and have installed in, I can access it in alt directories on my website, I can not access this one version, and it's driving me nuts.

Anyone help?
Thanks,
Div

Are cookies enabled in the browser? (Seems obvious I know, but...)

Heh:)
I had to check now...
Yes, I.E. advanced settings has cookies set to automatic handleing, and always allow. Nothing is marked in the Blocked fields, not working.:(

I get the login page, I get to:
/cgi-bin/newspro/newspro.cgi?login

You have been logged in. A "cookie" has been saved to your computer which should allow you to access this system without logging in in the future. Your browser must accept cookies to use this system.
Click here to go to the main page.
online help

I hit any link and it just boots me back to the login fields. It's not my username, as others have used it to test, I've used it as well in other netscape and in I.E. on different pc's.

I even ftp'ed into the directory just to do a refresh on all the files and verified the settings were chomded correct. I've never had this, never seen it, been using newspro a few years (3?).

Thanks,
Div

Sounds like a config problem or corrupted file on your PC. What happens if you go to your coranto.cgi using the IP address of your server instead of the domain?

Talk about a hijacked thread

Ok...
I havent tried this yet, so... I don't know if this will work, but if anyone else that still use's newspro, here is a repost.

NewsPro FAQ > Errors & Problems >
After logging in and clicking on a link, I'm brought back to the login page.

If when you click on a link on the login-confirmation page (the one that tells you a cookie has been set) you are brought back to the login page, there's a problem somewhere with cookies. Try the following steps:

- Check that cookies are enabled in your Web browser.- Check that your system's date is correct.- Some free web hosts don't provide full Perl implementations and are incompatible with NewsPro. Currently, the two known ones are Tripod and VR9. Several free hosts, like Hypermart, work well with NewsPro.- Particularly if your normally use MSIE, try a different browser (such as Netscape, Opera, or Mozilla).

If using a different browser fixes your problem, and you normally use IE, then the problem results from what we can only assume to be a bug in IE. To fix it, you have to clear your cookie cache. Doing this involves deleting all the files in a specific directory; exactly which directory depends on your version of Windows. If you're running a single-user Windows 98 setup, the directory is C:\Windows\Cookies. If you're running Windows 98 with multiple profiles, the directory is C:\Windows\Profiles\username\Cookies where username is your username. If you're running Windows 2000, it's C:\Documents and Settings\username\Cookies.

If none of the steps above help, it's possible that this is a server problem. Send the URL to your newspro.cgi, along with a valid username and password for that copy of NewsPro (any level of account is fine, though if this problem occurs right after setup, the valid user/pass will be for the main Webmaster account) to the support e-mail address. Only do this, please, if you've tried all the steps above, including using a different browser.

Well...

None of that worked for me, my last option would of been to email support ;p

Back to netscrape usuage for me, anyone using Newspro still, I highly suggest upgrading to Coranto ;>

Had the same problem but solved it...

Postby Von Snellfharer » Wed Jun 26, 2002 7:32 am

The problem had two sources:
#1 I had a personal firewall with a http-control (i turned off that funtion temporarily)

#2 I really WAS logged in, i just had to refresh the page (after logging in) with the ALT button held down (that was on a Mac, for PC-users this would be the CTRL-key).
On the Mac i experienced this problem with the iCab and Opera browser but the bug is similar to yours.

No probs with IE or Netscape 6 (Mac)

On the other hand, i have experienced PC's to be a bit lazy on the cacheing and refuse to update some pages.
I.E. on a PC, my news don't allways come up on my browser after publishing from NP, but if i browse my way with the Mac it is updated.
If i then reboot the PC (1 - 3 times) the news show up.

Good luck!

Von Snellfharer: Is Div Devlin another username you've used? If so, please let me know so I can merge it with your current one again; also do you have any *other* usernames? :D

If you can do that, ask AeroSoul. He might want his account merged with Billgates (cause Billgates is other account of AeroSoul)
