NetPBM

Postby sstoner » Sun Feb 22, 2004 1:55 am

Hi guys,
My web host has disabled NetPBM and thumbnails are no longer working, so off I went to download NetPBM at:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7130&package_id=14464

I've run into a problem. After downloading the package, I cannot un-compress the .gz archive on my windows machine. I've tried Winzip and Power Archiver, and all I get is one file, not a bunch of files.

Am I suppossed to uncompress these files on the server itself? If so, I have no idea how to do that. Sorry, I'm *nix ignorant (but I'm learning). Could some kind soul out there post step by step instructions for doing this from the command line? I've searched the forum (and many other places), and can't find understandable instructions anywhere. I think it might be helpful in the future for others also.

Thanks,
Sue

hello. Netpbm is a collection of many executable files.
Check out it here for Windows:
http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/netpbm.htm

In particular:
http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/downlin ... in-zip.php
is the direct link to the download location for a .zip file.

As for your questions:
- netpbm files are executable (most of them anyway). What you download (a .zip file) can be decompressed locally (on your PC) and run happily.
- you probably have downloaded a worng version or your browser did not save correctly. Try renaming that file .tar.gz Winzip, a recent version at least, should be able to handle those files very well (I use them with it).
- you can decompress locally and put on your remote server only the needed files (which will be probalby 10-15 for the thumbnailing functions, depending on the extension supports and/or filetring options implemented).
Coranto addons:

cerberos,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
All I had to do was rename the file with .tar.gz and Winzip was able to unzip the files.

Again, thank you! :D
