Email Collection

Postby cerberos76_ » Sat Nov 20, 2004 2:35 pm

Hi,
while working on the 1.30 series we discussed the necessity of having (or not) collection of emails during the set-up process. The need was initially derived by the wish to keep (willing) users informed of new releases, bugs etc.
But:
a) given might have been abused in the past (with lists published by some people who had access)
b) given there are solutions that are technically valid to replace this option
c) given the rigid legislation of private data treatment in many countries
d) given this function had been eliminated already for some versions (with a 404 page error)

I came to the conclusion that eliminating it was the best option, and this is what I did from 1.30.6. So, at present even in public mode, there are no connections to third party servers during the setup, but just a simple message saying that support can be found on these forums and a link to it.

My idea is to change slightly the text about email collection in the set-up process, talking about a NewsFlash Push Line which might be populated with 1 line of extremly urgent news and a link to more details if the setting is on.
The idea is to have (for those who reply yes) something similar to the image link with the latest version number, but a line long so that something like "Critical bug fixed in v1.22. Please download the new version" can be displayed in the Administration view. (in case no critical needs, the image might say "Your version is fully updated!")

This allows:
1) to "push" fast messages for critical issues to users willing to receive it
2) not to have risks with database of personal data
3) not to increase the privacy "invasion" with further collection of data. In fact this method does not collect any more data than the image with latest version does.

Please comment on this, so i can finilise it

This sounds very reasonable both from a security and a privacy point of view. Have you thought about linking that "urgent" line in the admin interface to a specific URL, say /urgent or /official? I would suggest /official, as this is where we will be putting new updates and info anyway.

Is it really necessary to "push" update information? Anyone that's serious about Coranto will most likely be a member on the forum and can get critical information that way. Quite simple, have a single thread on the forum for "CRITICAL UPDATES" and if anyone wants to subscribe to the forum and get e-mail notification of that one thread then that's the problem solved without anyone having to put any large effort into distribution of the info.

Or look at it another way, people already have to provide a valid mailing address to join the forum so what's the worry about collecting it during the install process for a mailing list? ;)
  • ProDefault - Change some defaults for new profiles.

How about making it an option that can be disabled via the admin interface, separately from public/private?

Of course this would be optional. In the set-up there is already an explicit option (which only is asked to public websites). The option can be added also to the admin view, but for privacy only to public sites.

In the past someone abused (or threatened to abuse) of that list of email addresses to send spam-advertising of a different product. That person had access to the list.

In terms of effort is really close to zero.
In theory this extremly urgent update would really be used only in critical cases (which hopefully should not happen that often). And even in those cases the mechanism would be even for the people doing it simpler than writing an email!
Certainly it is far less effort than collecting and managing the email addresses (if you wish to do it legally...). It offers far more privacy and immediate effect (it is guaranteed that will be seen on use of Coranto; not the same can be said about email...)

My $0.02:

Drop the email collection totally. It serves no purpose even till now. How many times have it been used thus far even for urgent updates? Zero.

Change it to something like an option for the administrator to choose: i.e. "Check for updates automactically?"
Of course, doing so, they cannot have the private/public option set to private because this process will check coranto.gwe ilo.org for updates.
If an update exists, it'll then have a link which when clicked will have the user redirected to a Human readable/understandable Changelog.

This option is much more effective then having the user check a forum frequently for new or critical updates, or having to sign up for some shody shady mailing list.

I am in line with your thinking Faithless. The process of email collection has in fact already been dropped in the 1.30 series.

I am implementing this urgent notification in a very easy way to manage... and of course will only be for public sites (for definition of what it does).
