One problem solved a few to go

Postby ptk » Tue Jun 18, 2002 3:15 pm

Hey,

Just want to thank everyone for their posts on my previous topic(s). I basically stayed up all last night, did a straight 24 hour session with the aid of much coffee:)

It is now working however I have hit a snag in my next plan,

What I want to do is have 4 news items, in which I can link the URL (Just the URL) on my page so it goes to them when the URL is clicked. Things is, how do you get the URL without the rest of the stuff like the news or the headlines?

I presume for something like this I could use Newscat and say create a new category called TopNews but would I need to create a profile or could I just use default profile?

Also I really simple question but I can't work it out, I want the date and time on top of the news template page, you know near where the email link is usually put for the poster. I guess you just ned to edit the news template file in the newspro directory but what do I put in it and where abouts?

Sorry for all the questions.

Thanks again and keep up the good work with the forum it is an invaluable resource!

Pk

I just need some help LOL

Postby ptk » Wed Jun 19, 2002 1:47 pm

Erm,

Okay I am English, English is my native language and yes sometimes my posts are rushed slightly. However I don't really feel your comments are constructive or helpful. If you don't know what I'm getting at in my posts then simply say so but going on with yourself about my poor post is not going to get anyone anywhere.

Which part didn't you understand? Looking back through it I can see why some parts are difficult to maybe understand what I'm getting at but it is quite a difficult explanation.

I can however post a URL to what I'm trying to do,

http://www.wrestlingplanet.com/indexmain.html

The top table which it titled Top Stories, can you see how he has got four URL's that link directly to the news posting. That's what I want to do, my question is, once you've written out the news using Newspro and saved it how do get the URL to that particular news?

Also the third (last) table on the page, I presume to get something like this I create a new profile in Newscat?

Finally on his news posts, click a link in the third table, he has the date, time on top of the posting - how do you do that?

Now I have re-read this posting and too me it looks fine and understandable. If however you don't understand something please let me know, preferably not by commenting how poor my spelling is or how poor my grammer is, if I wanted a grade on my work I would ask for one.

Pk:rolleyes:

(Numerous off-topic, unfriendly and unhelpful posts by one individual have been removed from this thread. The poster has been warned, and if they keep it up they'll be banned.)

Anybody else got a moment to lend ptk a hand?

Hey guys,

Im sorry if i hurt someone or went against the forum spirit and rules.

Never thought i would end up begging your pardon since im usally the most friendly type of guy you can find but I just feel bad because msbzdrgn made such a fuss about the engrish thing as it wasnt my intention to make fun of whoever, at all. Whats the point of mocking someone and then (try to) help him out? (this is rethorical)

For those messages i apologize and for anything i may have said in the past.

From now on, ill stick to objective messages. No jokes, no joy, no companionship. Just pure Newspro.

the URL only?

Postby plushpuffin » Wed Jun 19, 2002 8:32 pm

if you only want the URL you could just do this:

sub DoURLHTML {
$newshtml = qq~<a href="http://www.mysite.com/mainpage.html#$newsid">http://www.mysite.com/mainpage.html#$newsid</a>~;
}

or...

sub DoStaticPageURLHTML {
$newshtml = qq~<a href="http://www.mysite.com/$newsid.html">http://www.mysite.com/$newsid.html</a>~;
}

I am not quite sure what it is you mean by the URL only. Is this it?

I think so

Postby ptk » Wed Jun 19, 2002 9:13 pm

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, it looks like what I'm after.

I'll try and explain a bit better: -

For a visual of what I'm trying to do go to http://www.wrestlingplanet.com/indexmain.shtml

Look at the top table where he has four stories, the text is written himself but the link underneath links to a newstory created via a newspro like peice of software. He is not displaying the heading on that page or anything apart from a link for a news item he created using something like newspro.

what I was thinking was; -

1. write article in newspro
2. * Find out the URL to that article?
3. Create a link without a heading, not using newspro to that article.

It's hard to explain but hopefully you can understand what I mean.

If not then let me know and I'll have another go.

Thanks,

Pk:confused:

can i have a try

I read your posts again ptk, and at the same time compared to the link you provided - http://66.197.91.222/indexmain.shtml.

I understand now what you want to do and let me say this: the basis to get this done is Editing ndisplay.pl . Have you done this in past? (i think i asked you this before).

Basically you will have to create 3 profiles. One for "Top stories", one for "Recent News" and the third for "Wrestler columns".

Each of this profile will use its own Subroutine okay? venderveckette has provided two subroutines which i think serve well our purpose.

These subroutines will be all very similar. They are all based on the DoHeadlineHTML subroutine.
The only differences between the 3 routines will be the information they contain and display. This is done, by adding the proper variables to each routine. For example $newsdate shows the Date.

Before we continue i would like you to answer these:

- Have you modified ndisplay.pl before?
- Can you put here your list of categories and which ones are going to appear in which box? (Top stories", "Recent News", "Wrestler columns").

After your reply i will continue.

Thanks, have a nice time.

Oh man, i read your post again and got this whole new view on the issue.
Maybe you dont want any automatic links beeing created. Maybe all you need to know is the link to an article you have just created so you can type that link freely on any other articles and other parts of your site?

If this is the case, then there at least 3 ways of doing it.

1) As i described before :roll:

2) Install ShowID addon which will let you see newsid in "Modify News". Imagine newsid was 12345678. All you had to do was type this on your browser in order to see the article page: http://www.mydomain.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid12345678

3) Include a link to the own article on all your articles. Check this thread - http://coranto.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1097
