500 Internal Server Error

Postby MrCodeDude » Thu Aug 03, 2006 4:04 pm

Followed the installation instructions verbatim and it still gave me the 500 Internal Service Error. Server's error log says:

[2006-08-03 07:22:57]: error: file is writable by others: (/home/royalair/public_html/c2/coranto.cgi)

coranto.cgi CHMOD 755
viewnews.cgi CHMOD 755

I've tried changing these to 777, the same error occurs.

Any help?

[2006-08-03 07:22:57]: error: file is writable by others: (/home/royalair/public_html/c2/coranto.cgi)

Then you need to give fewer permissions.
755 should not give write permissions to anyone but the owner. Are you sure it wasn't 766 instead?

Yes, I've triple checked it. The /coranto.cgi file has the 755 permissions.

Ahh, I just noticed, in many common servers your whole coranto installation needs to go inside your cgi-bin directory in order to run. If there isn't a cgi-bin inside your root, ask your ISP if they can create one for you. Do you know what kind of server you are on?

I tried putting it in the /cgi-bin/ on a different server and it now gives me this tasty error:

[Fri Aug 4 19:53:31 2006] [error] [client 24.221.176.5] Premature end of script headers: /home2/verityhw/public_html/cgi-bin/coranto.cgi

All I can suggest is what's already been said so many times in this forum:

Check the path to perl (the first line in the script)
    Set the $abspath if necessary
Make sure you have uploaded in ASCII
    Try different permissions

I'm not the world's expert on server errors, but those are some common sources of 500 errors. Maybe someone more seasoned than I can help you find the cause of your specific problem.
