Strange <P> Tag being added into generated HTML

Postby Astradyne » Thu Jun 01, 2006 12:56 am

I've just upgraded to Coranto 1.24 with the Guestpost, WebWriter, News Categories and Maginot add ons, and shave tarted putting together a family news site.

One of the pages I am using Coranto for is the posting of links to be shared by family members.

I have a "favourite_links" style defined as:

Code: Select all
<a class=headline onmouseover="this.style.color='red'" onmouseout="this.style.color='black'" href="http://<TextField: CustomField_URL>"><Field: Subject></a>
<br>
<span class="bodytext">
<Field: Text>
</span>
<br><br>

and have category "Links" defined and assigned to a "favourite_links" profile.

The posting of links to the category and the generation of the "favourites.txt" file works fine until I add one particular link at which point a "<P>...</P>" tag pair are placed around the <Field: Text> for the one entry only:

Code: Select all
<a name="newsitemEEuApAVuFpDcGFwwfy"></a><a class=headline onmouseover="this.style.color='red'" onmouseout="this.style.color='black'" href="http://groups.msn.com/AS400RPGILEProgrammingWorld">AS/400 RPG & ILE Programming World</a>
<br>

<br>
<span class="bodytext">

<br>

<br>
<span class="bodytext">
Our favourite site for sudoku puzzles ranging from "easy" to "evil".
</span>
<br><br><br><i><small>Powered by Coranto</small></i><br>

I've tried deleting and re-entering the link details from and into Coranto, and I get the same results every time.

Any ideas or suggestions would be most gratefully welcomed.

Thanks

I believe that your 'problem' is being caused by WebWriter. WebWriter adds the opening and closing paragraph tag for the Text field as it's default behavior.

Try turning WebWriter off, editing the item and then rebuilding your news.

Hi Dale

Thanks for that, it seems to do the trick. I've changed the form that guestpost uses so that it doesn't go through Web Writer and it's generating the HTML properly.

What I don't understand though is why if it's the default behaviour for Web Writer do the tags only get inserted occasionally and not for all news items?

Thanks again

I am not sure why you are seeing inconsistent behavior. Were all of your users weren't using WebWriter? Did the person who enterd the post turn WebWriter off for that post? Another possibility is if WebWriter was installed after some of the items were created.

The problem behavior is caused by the HTML Area editor.

I stopped using WebWriter mostly because the tags are always inserted in uppercase. I use QuickTags which gives you control over the exact html code that is entered and you can add your own tags for special needs. The version on the addon page is not the latest, the link above is.

You may also want to look at these WYSIWYG addons:

Hi Dale

At the moment I'm the only person entering news items and hadn't even thought about turning off Web Writer until you suggested it :oops:

I've a Guestpost form on the page that allows the user to submit an entry using the "standard" non-Web Writer form which is working fine at the moment.

I will check out the other links you suggested as alternatives.

Thanks for all the help
