How to install netpbm

Postby Robidigital » Mon Apr 09, 2007 10:03 pm

Hi. I require netpbm because I am trying to use the thumbnail creation feature of the Multipart Addon 1.59. I am hosted on a VPS so I contacted my hosting provider and they said that they do not have netpbm installed on the server. They told me that I could install it myself, but they would not support me in doing so. Personally I think its ridiculous that they won't help me set it up since its widely used.

I am hosted on a Linux box running apache and redhat.
I have tried uploading the Linux Intel binaries to many different locations on the server, changing the permissions to 777, and changing the path in the multipart settings. When I submit a news item with an image, coranto creates the seperate file-thumb.gif version of the file, but it is 0kb and blank. This is not something netpbm is doing, because it was doing the same thing before I gave multipart a path to netpbm.

Has anyone encountered problems installing netpbm on their linux vps or does anyone have any tips or suggestions for me?

Thanks in advance to whoever might be able to help!

Have you checked whether you are able to run some of the netPBM binaries from the command line or not? If so, then there's a wrong path somewhere.

Also try and search the support archives (see link at top of this page) for "thumbnails AND 0 AND byte", which may reveal some answers.

The binaries did run fine from the shell. I checked my error log after submitting a news item. I had errors saying
sh: /usr/local/bin/ppmtojpeg: No such file or directory

The problem is that ppmtojpeg was replaced with pnmtojpeg. It took me a little while to find a package of binaries that still included ppmtojpeg, but I finally found an old package v1.1 that includes it. It can be found at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7130&package_id=14464&release_id=31626

Two days of trying to figure this out and finally got it! WAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOO!

Actually ppmtojpeg is renamed to pnmtojpeg in later versions of netpbm.
Maybe this should be corrected in Coranto.

Try renaming the newer file.
