linking headlines

Postby Dustin » Sat Dec 03, 2005 9:34 pm

Sorry if this question is really basic (I don't even know how I managed to get as far as I did)... I did a search but most threads I found didn't give quite a detailed enough description of what I should do. If you take a look at my site (http://www.burntsalad.com), you'll see I already got it so that I have only one article displayed in the body, and I have the headlines at the left, under "Recent Articles." I want to be able to click one of the headlines and have that article show up in the body.

I'm currently using 2 profiles, 1 for the headlines and 1 for the articles... but I have absolutely no idea what to do next. Thanks in advance for any help :P

well I got it working, but I pretty much had to chop up the site into a bunch of SSIs. I hope there wasn't a simpler way :P

Seems you got it working nicely. You could also have used an <IFRAME> for your body area, and then just refreshed the content of that ifram based on what was clicked in the left-hand menu.

I noticed you're new, so just wanted to see how you had this set up (and not some crazy way with SSI's). Are you using templates? Templates are basically the "wrap" around news, basically everything besides the "body" you describe, and then the style goes within the template (with each news item copying the style). You can achieve what you want relatively easy using a template.

Once you have a template, you can use Maginot or viewnews.cgi in order to display individual newsitems. The addon Maginot will create static pages (takes up more HDD space, less server resources) whereas viewnews.cgi takes less HDD space, but more server resources.

For more help on those two methods, try doing a search for Maginot Headlines.
