A bunch of NewsPro sites that could be Coranto sites...

Postby Quither » Wed Oct 01, 2003 3:57 pm

These are all technically NewsPro sites, but they could all be Coranto sites, since style, template and profile work is basically identical. Someday these prob. will be Coranto sites, but some of 'em are complex enough to upgrade that it may not happen due to time/$$ constraints.

My own website, btw, will hopefully be a Flash/HTML site run by Coranto within the next month...at this point my own site has literally not been updated since 1998, as I'm usually too busy getting real work done.

NewsPro Credit

Postby Quither » Wed Oct 01, 2003 6:27 pm

I actuallly included a long treatise on why this was the case -- some lack of NewsPro credits, but nuked it at the last minute because it seemed so.... old school, but here's the short version....

I always had NP credits all over but when AmbphibianWeb went down, some of the site owners got pretty miffed -- they had spread some word around at some non-profit conventions that there was this cool open-source product, and all these folks went and clicked the NewsPro links to AmphibianWeb and got ... nada. Embarrassment ensued.

Link to this site then. Coranto nor NewsPro are open source, read more in this thread.

Tough, for stuff related to NewsPro, check out NewsPro Factory.

Sorry, misspoke or typed ... I guess I mean freeware ... since the license on NewsPro required link to AmphibianWeb and that site no longer exists, and the very forums here state that Elvii is missing or dead or gone or whatever, it seems nebulous...

In any case, that's some thread. Have watched split brewing and it is very disheartening. But that's a topic for another forum topic (so to speak).

All I can say is I would be happy to contribute design and format proposals for new Coranto site, that uses every Coranto trick in the book (and then some). I owe a lot to both scripts as a designer, because it's easy to revise and change and tweak designs when all your content gets run through the script -- i.e., it's easy to apply new designs site wide. However, I wouldn't want to put a lot of work into a design and have everybody argue about it forever.

The (currenlty) insane disorganization and lack of documentation and a features list is probably the biggest impediment to spreading the Coranto seeds. Heck, there's not even a list of Hooks that Addon developers can use, let alone a real users' guide. But again, that's another topic, another forum.

actully. there is no need to, and there is one. A person quite a while ago posted the list of all hooks in Coranto.

but you see, when an addon developer starts working on something then the only way to make an addon is to know Coranto thruout. you find a place you would like your addon to hook into, you find the nearest hook and you use it. they are commented inside the code and pretty easy to find.

Where is that list of hooks -- that would be way cool.

I've created a few small addons for practice and for my own idiosyncratic purposes, and found my hooks OK, but it all takes TIME. Even just finding the really important hooks (like during data retrieval and news builds) took a bit. Also, in the last release weren't some new hooks added? I guess what I'm saying is that documentation is not the same thing as tons of forum posts that have to be waded through. But thanks!

I agree to some extent, a list of hooks would be cool, but to actually use them you would have do dig into the core anyway... It is also very educational to look into other addons! :D

Couldn´t resist to add a link about the new hook you are talking about: http://coranto.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4672;-)

The list of hooks can be gathered by a script or a good text editor grepping it all out. I might do it if it wouldn't be 0:08am

but it doesn't matter really, in order to use the hook or find out what it does, you would have to find it in the core and for that, only a good text editor will be in service.

Quither, There is one thing I hate, and theat is people speaking without knowing what they say....
For a list of hooks check this:
http://coranto.org/forum/viewtopic.php? ... =hook+list
(only a few small additions were made since then to the hook list)

But as a real addon developer I can guarantee that a list like that is useless. Rather read the Coranto code and check where you need to hook into. What the name is of the nearest hook is then very easily found in the code itself. You will discover this once you start writing an addon for real (I haven't seen any from you) and will understand how useless is a list of hooks.

As for documentation: I can guarantee that the Addon guide that you can find on this site, is excellent. I knew nothing at all about Coranto nor NewsPro when I started reading it. I had just started using Coranto and wished to customise it better...
From it you can really understand ALL you need to know if you are a perl programmer. Give it a go and if you have problems, post it.

As for your comments on the user front of this site and the usage documentation: agreed, there is need for some improvements.
The real reasons of slowness is the lack of time from everyone.
But check this initiative and see if you can help.
http://coranto.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5915

And please before you write again of "(currenlty) insane disorganization" of this site, check once more your own sentence: "my own site has literally not been updated since 1998, as I'm usually too busy getting real work done."

If you don't find time to update you site for 5 years, why would you pretend a very efficient Coranto site?
And then ok, this site is currently not the best I have seen, but as for content/information has really plenty for those who wish to find it out....

Of course we are changing things for the better and would welcome *ANY* help. Give a look to the list of things to do and see how you can help...
